Prabhu Deva: Overview

Prabhu Deva, born on 3 April 1973 in Mysore, Karnataka, is an Indian choreographer, dancer, actor, director, producer, and occasional singer, lyricist, and screenwriter. Over the course of more than three decades, he has become one of the most recognizable movement innovators in Indian cinema, often called the Indian Michael Jackson because of his fluidity, precision, and ability to merge classical discipline with commercial style. He began as a choreographer in South Indian cinema and rose to national fame through songs and films that showcased his distinctive rhythm and athletic stage presence. Beyond choreography, he built a successful acting career and later became a major commercial director in Hindi and Tamil cinema with films such as Wanted, Rowdy Rathore, and Singh Is Bliing. He has won multiple National Film Awards for Best Choreography and received the Padma Shri in 2019. Public biographies identify his father as dance master Mugur Sundar. He has also remained active as a producer and performer, making him one of the few Indian film personalities with sustained success across dance, acting, and direction.
