Sridevi: Overview

Sridevi began her film career as a child artist and transitioned to lead roles in multiple South Indian film industries before establishing herself in Hindi cinema. Over a career spanning five decades she delivered commercially successful and critically acclaimed performances, combining dramatic acting with classical and popular dance skills. Her notable Hindi films include Mr. India, Sadma, Chandni, Lamhe and English Vinglish.

She received numerous awards during her career, including multiple Filmfare Awards and the civilian honour Padma Shri in 2013. Sridevi was praised for her screen presence, comic timing and ability to carry female-led narratives in a male-dominated industry.

Outside cinema, she maintained a relatively private personal life. Married to producer Boney Kapoor, she was the mother of two daughters, both of whom later entered the film industry. Sridevi died in Dubai on 24 February 2018; her passing prompted widespread tributes from colleagues, critics and fans, and she continues to be remembered as a pioneering figure in Indian cinema.
