Kapil Dev: Overview

Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj is a former Indian cricketer who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s as a leading all‑rounder. He made his international debut in 1978 and became known for his pace bowling, athleticism and powerful lower‑order batting. Domestically he represented Haryana and was a prominent figure in Indian cricket for more than a decade.

As captain, Kapil Dev led India to its historic victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, a landmark achievement that transformed the sport’s profile in the country. Over his international career he set significant records for Indian cricket, including a long-standing world record total of 434 Test wickets at the time of his retirement in 1994.
