He began his career in the Chennai film industry and achieved prominence in the early 1990s with a distinctive style that combined Indian classical elements with contemporary electronic and orchestral arrangements.

Rahman’s breakthrough came with critically acclaimed film scores and he achieved international recognition for his work on the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, for which he received two Academy Awards as well as other international honors.
